I have a very good dentist and have no reason to complain. However, I have a very old Crown on one of my 2 big front teeth (central incisor?), from 30 years ago. When I had an abscess back then, my dentist told me that I should have had a root canal filling, as my current crown is only being held by a bonding agent, and the crown post isn’t held within a ‘filled’ area which means it could come out at any time (it did come out a few years ago and he re-stuck the tooth). He said that this is quite a specialist job and he recommends one particular specialist, but the cost is approximately £1500. Does this sound right, as most other people I’ve spoken to say it should cost between £200-£500?

Having the strongest is not always the best , Think of a plug and a 13Amp fuse . The fuse strength protects the appliance .A talented clinician will match the restoration to the remaining strength and surrounding teeth . It is always better to have a crown break rather than a root split and fracture ,
especially if you are young .

With regard to cost , expert magnification equipment and tools cost much more than the NHS will allow for . The aim is to take everything out of the root canal without going through the root apex , a talent in itself .
The fit and longevity on the NHS is accepted at 3 years by Prof Steele who has masterminded the new NHS. They will not cover implant and root replacement .

I would go for a second opinion , you would not want to risk fracturing your root either way .

It sounds like this tooth has already had a lot of dentistry and it is unlikely that the new crown will give you another 30years on such a fragile tooth
There are many options and it is possible that a specialist carrying out the treatment will give you a result that will look better and maybe last better but you will need to be certain that it is money well spent as and implant retained crown will always give better service than a post crown on a root filled tooth and will only cost from £500 more than the maximum fee you have been quoted
