These are fillings made in a laboratory which are bonded to your natural tooth.  They are aesthetically superior to the common amalgam and chairside composite fillings. 


Inlays are made from either porcelain, composite materials and/or gold. The accuracy of fit is much harder to achieve as it is such a small part of a tooth and so the bonding material in some instances is a filler.  I


In this function, when adhering mechanically, the filler presents two bonding interfaces.  When this filler is composite and the inlay is also composite, the result is one bonding interface.  The resulting stronger, more stable join is much more forgiving technically and provides an above-average aesthetic result.
